Barry: Rescued 40 lives in Swiss Alps

18. Barry: Rescued 40 lives in Swiss Alps

Barry, a Saint Bernard, was a legendary mountain rescue dog who lived in St. Bernard Pass from 1800 to 1812. The heroic canine saved 40 lives in his 12-year career span. For Barry, saving lives was not a task but something he was simply born to do. One of his most famous rescues was captured in various paintings which showed him valiantly carrying an unconscious child to safety.

The painting showcases the unconditional love and the protective instincts our canine friends have towards us. Barry’s body has been preserved and memorialized at the Natural History Museum in Berne, Switzerland.
